How does health coverage for international students differ outside British Columbia?

Not every province allows international students to join its public health plan. OHIP in Ontario generally does not cover international students, who need private coverage through their school, school district or another accepted provider. Alberta and some other provinces have conditional arrangements with different coverage and waiting periods. Once you choose a province and school, ask that school or district directly about required or recommended coverage and cost; B.C. MSP rules are not a Canada-wide default.

What to verify

• Identify whether the school, district, homestay agency or an independent provider delivers the service and handles complaints or changes.
• Review meals, transportation, holiday accommodation, curfews, room arrangements and early-termination charges.
• Confirm coverage effective dates, waiting periods, exclusions, up-front payment and claims procedures.
• Ensure the student, homestay family, custodian and parents share the same emergency and insurance information.
