How does British Columbia's Medical Services Plan (MSP) work for international students, including mid-year arrivals?

International students studying in British Columbia with a valid study permit for six months or longer must enrol in the Medical Services Plan (MSP). The monthly fee is CAD $75. MSP has a waiting period: the balance of the month of arrival plus two additional months, or roughly three months in practice. Buy private coverage for that gap and apply to Health Insurance BC as soon as you arrive. A K–12 student moving on to post-secondary study must also update their status. Health coverage differs by province; for example, OHIP in Ontario generally does not cover international students.

What to verify

• Identify whether accommodation services are provided by the school, school district, homestay agency or an independent provider, and who handles complaints or a move.
• Read the contract for meals, transportation, holiday accommodation, curfews, room arrangements and early-termination charges.
• Confirm the effective date, waiting period, exclusions, up-front payment and claims process for provincial and private health coverage.
• Ensure the student, homestay family, custodian and parents all hold the same emergency-contact and insurance information.
