How do schools decide a transferring student's grade placement?

Ontario and British Columbia generally organize grade placement by calendar year of birth, using December 31 as the age cutoff. A school board may still review prior transcripts, current enrolment records, English and mathematics readiness, and interview or assessment results. International transfer students are not guaranteed the same grade number they attended elsewhere, and other provinces, including Quebec, may use different rules.
