What is a PGWP, and does graduating from a DLI guarantee eligibility?

A post-graduation work permit (PGWP) is an open work permit for eligible graduates of Canadian programs and can be used to gain Canadian work experience. Its length depends on the level and duration of the program, passport validity and the rules in effect. A PGWP is not a degree or permanent resident status and does not automatically lead to permanent residence.

DLI status means that an institution is designated to host international students, but it does not mean every program at that institution is PGWP-eligible. Applicants must meet general requirements, complete a PGWP-eligible program, follow applicable full-time and continuous-study rules, apply on time, meet language requirements and, where applicable, satisfy field-of-study rules. Some private or public-private curriculum-licensing programs are not eligible.

A PGWP can generally be received only once. Before accepting an offer or paying tuition, check the exact campus and program on IRCC’s DLI list and PGWP eligibility pages and keep a dated record. Work obtained on a PGWP must still be assessed separately for CEC or provincial nominee eligibility.
