How can graduate study, such as a master's degree, affect my immigration plans?

Graduate study can support several immigration pathways. From January 1, 2026, eligible master's and doctoral students at public DLIs are exempt from the PAL/TAL requirement. A master's degree or higher can also add CRS points, and some provincial streams give priority to graduate degree holders. It also means new tuition and living costs and delays the time available to enter the workforce and gain work experience for CEC, so weigh it against your finances and career plan.

What to verify

• Program completion, a PGWP, qualifying work experience, pool entry and an invitation to apply are separate stages.
• Each stage has its own deadlines and requirements for language, occupation, work experience, status and documents.
• A PGWP generally cannot be renewed merely because it has expired, and a pending PR application does not automatically extend work authorization.
• Federal and provincial thresholds change; a past score or pathway is not a guarantee.

Planning advice

Build a timeline around program completion, final transcript or completion-letter dates, study-permit expiry and the PGWP deadline. Plan early for language tests, work evidence and maintaining status.
